Just yesterday, I decided to play my keyboard for the first time in forever. I must have had some pent up song juice stored in me because I made a song in no time. This is unusual for me because: a) I am a slow worker, and b) I am not good at the keyboard. In fact, I have trouble playing my own song, but with practice I should be able to get the hang of it. I'm actually quite excited about this!
What am I doing to celebrate this invigoration in my interest in keyboard? I am downloading (and listening to) some good old classical music. I may have mentioned this before, but I've been interested in learning and getting to know music from centuries past. I've wanted to do this for many reasons. For one, I love the sounds of an orchestra. The way the different instruments work together while each playing very different things is something that is harder to find these days. But mostly what interests me is that it is (without going into too much detail) creative, artistic, and intelligent.
My goal in mind (other than finding great music) is to become accustomed to this type of music. My favorite songs right now share traits that are evident in classical songs. Hopefully, getting to know the likes of Beethoven and Bach will influence how I myself make music. Maybe I'll be able to easily implement changes in tempo, time signature, and dynamic range. Or maybe the culture of today's music is too ingrained in my brain for the classical music to have much effect. I hope that I at least gain the ability to connect with this music, because that would feel like a big accomplishment for me.
