Creating Music

Friday, July 1, 2011
I find that creating good original music is a very tough thing. Normally, I'll sit with my bass resting on my lap, and I'll play whatever comes to mind. However, much of this wouldn't make good music material. In order to make music properly, I'll first have to understand how I do it.

I don't actually use notes and scales, but what the hell

The first things I usually play when i pick up my bass are some simple scales, with a lot of improvising. I'll basically solo around in E or A, because it's incredibly fun. It all sounds cool, except it's not really a song.

I suppose that's my way of warming up, before actually attempting to make a song. What follows is the part where I should be making music. I do sometimes formulate new melodies and ideas here, but they often turn into nothing and I get bored of them quick.

After a certain amount of time, I become all to comfortable with my bass. This is usually characterized by me laying back and closing my eyes. What I play at this point is very abstract, and has no musical sense. All of this is very interesting, but would probably make horrible music.

I'm not sure what to take from all this. Maybe I should change my method of songwriting, or maybe I just need more practice.
